Karttula [ kɑrtːulɑ ] was a municipality in the administrative community Kuopio in the Finnish countryside Savo . Since January 1, 2011, it has been part of the Kuopio municipality . At the time of incorporation, Karttula had 3514 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2010) on 588.75 km² (of which 115.37 km² inland water area). Karttula was monolingual in Finnish.

The former community comprised three settlement centers, all of which are lined up on the road to Kuopio: the parish of Karttula, Pihkainmäki and Syväinniemi. It also included the villages of Airaksela, Haapamäki, Hakulila, Hautolahti, Humalaniemi, Joutsensalmi, Juurikkaniemi, Karttula, Keihästaival, Kemppaanmäki, Koivujärvi, Koivulahti, Koskenkylä, Kuivanäki, Putti, Riunnmäki, Salunnmäki, Salunni, Ri, Lunni, Ri, Lunni Sammankontaus, Soidinlahti, Tallus, Utrianlahti, Vaarunjärvi, Valkeistaival, Viitataival as well.

Karttula benefits from its proximity to Kuopio, the largest city in Eastern Finland, which is 45 km to the east. Families with children in particular are moving into the community, which is reflected in the fact that in 2003 the proportion of 0 to 14 year olds was disproportionately high at 20.1 percent of the population. In Karttula there are also numerous holiday homes ( mökki ), so that the number of inhabitants almost doubles in summer due to the holiday guests. Sights in Karttula are the house museum of Riuttala, the churches of Syvänniemi (built 1926) and Karttula (1930) and the Orthodox prayer house of Syvänniemi.
