Sastamala [ ˈsɑstɑˌmɑlɑ ] is a city in western Finland , which was created at the beginning of 2009 through the merger of the city of Vammala and the municipalities of Äetsä and Mouhijärvi . Kiikoinen has also been part of it since 2013 .
geography
Sastamala is located in the west of the Pirkanmaa landscape on the border with Satakunta . Neighboring cities and communities are Ikaalinen in the north, Hämeenkyrö , Nokia and Vesilahti in the east, Punkalaidun in the southeast, Huittinen in the southwest, Kokemäki , Kiikoinen and Lavia in the west and Kankaanpää in the northwest.
The urban area of Sastamala covers an area of 1385.93 square kilometers on the shores of Lake Rautavesi . This makes Sastamala larger than Berlin in terms of area . In fact, it is not an urban structured area. Rather, the urban area consists of several settlement centers and the rural areas in between.
history
A parish of Sastamala had existed since the 13th century and initially covered a very wide area. In the 15th century, the parish of Ala-Sastamala ("Lower Sastamala") dissolved. This later split into the communities of Karkku , Tyrvää , Kiikoinen and Kiikka . Mouhijärvi , Suodenniemi and Lavia developed from the remaining Ylä-Sastamala ("Upper Sastamala") .
The place Vammala was founded in 1907 as an independent market town (kauppala) , in 1965 the place received city rights. In 1973 Karkku and Tyrvää were incorporated into Vammala, followed in 2007 by Suodenniemi. Äetsä municipality was created in 1981 through the merger of Kiikka and Keikyä municipalities . In 2007 the city of Vammala and the municipalities of Äetsä and Mouhijärvi decided to merge into a new city. In contrast, the Punkalaidun community decided against a planned connection. Initially, the name of the new town was Rautavesi after the lake of the same name, but ultimately it was decided to use the name Sastamala as a resort to the medieval parish . The coat of arms of the former municipality of Karkku was chosen as the coat of arms.
