Orivesi [ ˈɔrivɛsi ] is a city in western Finland with 9221 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located around 40 km northeast of Tampere in the Pirkanmaa landscape .
Orivesi was first mentioned in the church records in 1540, the parish was established in 1869. The Eräjärvi parish was incorporated into Orivesi in 1973, and Orivesi was declared a town in 1986. In 2007, the urban area expanded through the incorporation of the western parts of the dissolved municipality of Längelmäki .
After the fire in the old wooden church , the modern Kaarikirkko Church was built in 1961 . Its shape, which is modeled on a fish when viewed from above, and its five large arched walls symbolize the biblical miracle of feeding with the five loaves (= walls) and two fish (= roof and floor). Opposite the church is the old church tower, which was spared from the fire. In the Eräjärvi district is a wooden church built in 1821.
An art museum by a lake , the Purnu , is open in the summer. In Orivesi there are over 220 lakes, the largest of which is the Längelmävesi .
Annual cultural events include the Johan Willgren Festival with classical music . The Oriveden Opisto Institute offers concerts, etc.
The Finnish train station VR-Yhtymä is about 5 kilometers from the city center. There are direct train connections to Tampere, Jyväskylä , Helsinki , Haapamäki , Joensuu and Pieksämäki , among others . The train takes you to downtown Tampere in 24 minutes. There are bus connections to many Finnish cities. The bus station is in the city center.
