Ikaalinen (Swedish Ikalis ) is a small town in western Finland and the largest health resort in the country. The city is monolingual Finnish. It is located around 50 km northwest of Tampere on the national road 3 to Vaasa on the west bank of Lake Kyrösjärvi .
history
The municipality Ikaalinen was founded as early as 1641 and included the villages west and north of Kyrösjärvi. In 1858 the eponymous place Ikaalinen was removed as a market town from the community association. It was the first place of its kind in all of Finland, but developed very slowly over the years, mainly because of the competition from the nearby city of Tampere. In 1920 the town of Ikaalinen only had around 250, while the rural community had 12,500 inhabitants; it was not until 1972 that they were merged again. In 1977 the municipality received city rights.
The bathing establishment was founded in 1884 by the merchant GN Eränen and has since become a popular holiday destination. It is Northern Europe's largest spa and is now part of the Rantasipi Group (hotel chain). In the last few decades, several industrial companies have also settled in Ikaalinen, including the gear parts manufacturer Katsa and the mini- grip zip bag manufacturer Suominen . In 1982, the Seitseminen National Park was founded, in which Ikaalinen in the north of its district has a share.
Ikaalinen is part of the historical landscape of Satakunta and belonged to the Lääni Turku and Pori (Turun ja Porin lääni) until 1997 . It was not until the Finnish administrative reform of 1997 that the town was added to the Pirkanmaa countryside .
media
In Ikaalinen, the local newspaper Pohjois-Satakunta appears twice a week with a circulation of around 6,000 copies. The city is also the seat of the radio station Sun FM (until 2005 Radio Satahäme ).
