Sortavala (until 1918 Serdobol ; Russian Сортавала, Сердоболь , Finnish Sortavala , Swedish Sordavala ) is a city in the Republic of Karelia in Russia . It is located on the north shore of Lake Ladoga and has 19,235 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
The city of Sortavala was founded as Serdobol in the area of the Votskaja Pyatina (Russian: вотская пятнина, German: Wattlande) of the Novgorod Republic . The original name of the city of Serdobol comes from the northern Russian word serdobol'nik (Russian: сердобольник), which means wine rose in German. The city was first mentioned in Swedish documents around 1468. This city played an important role in the medieval Swedish-Novgorodian Wars. Serdobol received its town charter as Sordavala in Kexholms län in 1632 from the Kingdom of Sweden . Since 1721 after the end of the Great Northern War , the city as Serdobol belonged again to Russia . From the beginning of the 19th century until 1917 the city belonged as Serdobol to the Grand Duchy of Finland in the Russian Empire and from 1918 as Sortavala to independent Finland , before it was again ceded to Russia after the Second World War .
