Kalewala ( Russian Калевала , Finnish and Karelian Kalevala ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Karelia in northwestern Russia . From the 16th century to 1963 the place was called Uchta (Russian Ухта , Karelian and Finnish Uhtua ). Kalewala has 4529 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is the administrative seat of the Kalewala Rajons . The place is located on the north bank of the lake Sredneje Kuito 550 km northwest of Petrozavodsk and 182 km west of Kem .

Uchta was one of the villages in which Elias Lönnrot recorded the orally transmitted folk poetry in the 19th century, on the basis of which he created the Finnish national epic Kalevala . Based on this, Ukhta was renamed Kalewala in 1963 when it was given the status of an urban-type settlement .
