Pudosch ( Russian Пудож , Karelian Puudoži , Finnish Puutoinen or Puudosi) is a city in the Republic of Karelia ( Russia ) with 9,698 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 115 kilometers east of the republic capital Petrozavodsk on the right bank of the Wodla , about 30 kilometers above its confluence with Lake Onega .
Pudosh is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
history
The place was established in 1382 as a settlement of Pudoga , later also called Pudoshski pogost ( Pudoscher Kirchhof ). The name is derived from the Karelian word for river arm .
On May 16, 1785, the place received city rights under its current name, later as the administrative center of a district of the Olonez Governorate .
At the end of the 18th century, several glassworks were built in the area, and sawmills at the end of the 19th century. The gray and pink-gray granites from Kaschina Gora have been used for cladding Saint Petersburg and Moscow buildings since the 19th century .
In the city there was a prisoner of war camp 447 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War .

Culture and sights
A number of residential buildings from the 19th century have been preserved in the city center. The city has a history and local museum .
Around 800 Neolithic and Bronze Age rock carvings , the so-called Onega petroglyphs , were discovered at the mouth of the Wodla in Lake Onega .
The 468,915 hectare Wodlosero National Park has been stretching north of the city since 1991 and has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2001 . One of the visitor centers, as well as the administration of the Pudosh sector of the park, is located in the village of Kugnawolok in the Pudosh district .
