Wladimir Leonidowitsch Pettai ( Russian Владимир Леонидович Петтай ; born May 8, 1973 in Pudosch ; † June 20, 2011 in Bessowez, Karelia ) was a Russian football referee as well as football and futsal player .
Career
player
Pettai played at the amateur level for Karelija Asmaral and Spartak Petrozavodsk. At Asmaral, his friend Sergei Semak was one of his teammates. In 1999 he played futsal for IFC GTS Petrozavodsk, where he retired in 2001.
referee
In the summer of 1996, Pettai became a referee. Since 2003 he has directed games in the Russian Premier League and had his 100th appearance there in June 2011. His last game was the match between FK Dynamo Moscow and Rubin Kazan on June 14, 2011. Pettai was considered a particularly likeable referee by officials and players in the Premjer League. In 2009 he was appointed FIFA referee. The U-21 European Championship qualifier between Slovakia and Croatia on May 19, 2010 was the only match he directed in this role.
Private life
Pettai was 20 June 2011 in the crash of a Tupolev Tu-134 of airline RUSAIR near the airport of Petrozavodsk killed. The plane crashed on a freeway and burned out.
Pettai was married and had two children. Until his death he was an educator at the Petrozavodsk Sports School № 7.
