List of cities in the Republic of Karelia
This is a list of urban-type cities and settlements in the Russian Republic of Karelia .
The following table contains the cities (name in bold ) and urban-type settlements of the republic, their Russian and Karelian names, the administrative units to which they belong ( Rajon or urban district ), their population figures for October 14, 2010, their coats of arms and geographical coordinates as well the years of granting urban-type settlement (SsT) status and town charter, if applicable. There are 13 cities and 11 urban-type settlements in the republic (as of 2019). Four cities emerged from urban-type settlements, one was previously a minority ( kauppala in Finnish ) while it was part of Finland until 1940 .
Former cities
In addition to today's urban-type settlement Povenets that had the town rights to 1927 (see table above), there is in the Republic of Karelia, another former City: The present village (selo) Padany ( Паданы , Karelian Puatane ; position ) in the rayon Medweschjegorski had the city charter from 1782 to 1787 under the name Padansk ( Паданы ).
