history
Kostomuksha is one of the youngest places in Karelia. It was created in 1977 during the construction of an iron ore mining combine and was named after the nearby Kostomukscha or Kostamus Lake, the hydronym of which is again of Finno-Ugric origin. The founding anniversary of Kostomuksha is celebrated by the locals on May 1st.
The settlement received city status on April 25, 1983, and a year later the mining combine was finally completed.

Economy and Infrastructure
The Kostomukscha Mining Combine (today: Karelski Okatysch Joint Stock Company ) is still the main operation of the city, and employs around half of the population. There are other important companies in the wood and food industries. Due to the proximity to Finland, there are several industrial projects in cooperation with foreign companies, including a wood factory with Ikea participation and a Russian-Finnish joint venture for the manufacture of vehicle parts for Volvo products.
Recently, international tourism in Kostomuksha, as in other parts of Karelia near the border, has also experienced an upswing.
The city has a railway connection on a branch line of the Murman Railway from Saint Petersburg to Murmansk . There is also a rail link to Finland that is only used for freight transport.
Culture
In summer the city celebrates the folk festival Den Gornjaka (" Mountain Farmer's Day"). Kostromuksha is also known for its chamber music festival .
