Oili Tanninen (born July 22, 1933 in Sortawala ) is a Finnish illustrator and children's book author .

Life

The beginning of her career as a writer and illustrator began quite early. At the age of six, she had to spend a lot of time in air raid shelters as a little girl during the so-called Winter War . Here she invented her first imaginative stories - for her own reassurance and distraction - and also made drawings for them. In 1953 she graduated in fine arts and initially worked as a designer at Arabia Finland .

At the same time, she began to professionally write and illustrate children's books. She also created two of her characters, Nunnu and Miiru , in animated films for Finnish television. Her breakthrough as a children's book author came in 1965 with Nunnu . She received numerous awards. In 1964 she was nominated for the Danish Hans Christian Andersen Prize , in 1970 she received the State Youth Award and the Anni Swan Medal .

The first of the three volumes in the Nunnu series has been available in a German translation for the first time since 2008. It was also published in Italian, Japanese, and Korean in 2008.

Oili Tanninen has lived abroad with her husband for many years, including in Moscow , London and Washington . They currently live in Helsinki .

The idiosyncratic as well as humorous and lovable title character Nunnu with her two friends Hoppu and Möksö is one of the modern children's book classics in Finland , comparable for example to Santa Claus by Mauri Kunnas , the little mole by Zdeněk Miler , Willi Wiberg by Gunilla Bergström , the characters by Fiep Westendorp or James Krüss and Lisl Stich.
