Yrjö Kokko

Yrjö Olavi Samuli Kokko (born October 16, 1903 in Sortavala on Lake Ladoga , † September 6, 1977 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish veterinarian and writer .

Life

Yrjö Kokko attended grammar school in Viipuri , which he graduated from university in 1923. Even while still at school, he had to take on odd jobs due to the untimely death of his parents. He studied veterinary medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover , the University of Tartu and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna . He became a veterinarian in Finland and took part in the Finnish-Russian winter war in 1939 . After the end of the war he settled down as a district veterinarian in Enontekiö in Finnish Lapland .

His literary work is characterized by his masterly observation of nature. As a conservationist, he was particularly committed to the whooper swan . He illustrated many of his books, some of which were also translated into German, with photographs he had made. In 1945 he received the Finnish National Prize for Literature (Valtion kirjallisuuspalkint) for the children's book Pessi and Illusia , which he wrote for his children during the war . In 1957 he was awarded the Order of the Lion of Finland .
