Horst Sitta

Horst Sitta (born May 5, 1936 in Teplitz-Schönau ; † May 25, 2020 in Herrliberg ) was a German linguist .

Life

Sitta was born in the Sudetenland in 1936 and witnessed the expulsion as a child . After attending school in Müelte (Geiseltal) , Schulpforta and Heilbronn , where he passed the final exam at the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium , he began studying classical philology (Latin, Greek) and German studies at the University of Tübingen in 1955 , which he completed with a state examination (1960) and doctorate to Dr. phil. (1961) graduated. His activity as a grammar school teacher for German, Latin and Greek in Stuttgart (1960 to 1965) was followed (from 1966) by research and teaching as a research assistant at the Chair of German Philology ( Hans Glinz ) at the German Institute of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule in Aachen , where he completed his habilitation (1971) and was appointed private lecturer in German philology . In 1972 he was professor of German language and its teaching at the Pedagogical University of Aachen , where he in 1976 a call to Switzerland to the Chair for German language, especially present-day language of the University of Zurich followed, he held until his retirement held (2001) . From 2008 to 2013 he taught as a contract professor at the Free University of Bolzano . From 2012 to 2018 he was also in charge of the historical-critical edition of Johann Caspar Lavater's writings at the University of Zurich.

Sitta was a member of the Intergovernmental Commission for German Spelling .

He died in May 2020 at the age of 84.

Honors

In 1996 the PH Ludwigsburg awarded him an honorary doctorate "for his research on central topics in language didactics and for his groundbreaking contributions, especially to grammar, spelling and essay lessons".
