history
In 1035 Appeln was first mentioned under the name Appellenn . Archaeological urn finds, however, show that the place was settled much earlier.
In the 1970s, jewelry, implements and urns were found in Appeln. They come from the pre-Roman Iron Age and the older Bronze Age .
During the Wars of Liberation in 1813/14 Cossacks quartered in Appeln and plundered the village. In 1848 the place was given a cemetery and in 1837 a school, replaced in 1929 by a new building that now houses a kindergarten and youth room. In 1907 a dairy was built and the windmill built in 1846 burned down.
From 1900 to 1924 the farmer Nikolaus Tietjen (1873-1924) was mayor for many years and was of particular importance. From 1919 to 1924 he was a member of the tax assessment commission of the Geestemünde district council. In the inflationary years 1921–1923 he organized food deliveries to the Lower Weser towns for the starving people. He was also responsible and signed the emergency money issued during this time for the seven communities of Appeln, Frelsdorf , Frelsdorfermühlen , Meyerhof, Osterndorf , Wehldorf and Wollingst , the so-called Söben-Däne-Schiene (Sieben-Dörfer- Schiene ).
In July 1940 Belgian prisoners of war came to Appeln. At the end of the war, Appeln was part of the main battle line, but spared from fighting. The number of bombed out and refugees was over 300 at the end of the war, of which around a tenth remained in the village.
Incorporation
In 1971 the municipality of Appeln became one of the nine member municipalities of the integrated municipality of Beverstedt .
On November 1, 2011, the previously independent Appeln became a village in the unified municipality of Beverstedt.

coat of arms
The design of the municipal coat of arms of Appeln comes from the heraldist and coat of arms painter Gustav Völker , who designed around 25 coats of arms in the district of Cuxhaven.
Blazon : " oblique links shared , at the top of Silver a green apple with green stem and two green leaves , bottom in red a slight left Asked golden ear of corn ." | |
Justification of the coat of arms: The apple indicates the interpretation of the place name as an apple grove, the ear of corn indicates agriculture as the main livelihood. |

War memorial
In 1956, a memorial of honor was erected in the Appeln cemetery to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the First and Second World Wars. It was created by the sculptor Ulrich Conrad from Worpswede.
On the front of the monument an angel can be seen holding a sword in one hand (with the tip pointing downwards) and raising his left hand. The names of the missing and fallen from both world wars are carved on the side of the monument. On the reverse is the verse, “The hour will come when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice; and those who have done good will come forth for the resurrection of life. ”(John; 5. V; 28 and 29) to read.
societies
In addition to the volunteer fire brigade with an active youth fire brigade , there is also the nature and environmental protection association Frelsdorf and Appeln, the local rifle club as well as the tennis club Appeln and the gymnastics and sports club Appeln. The Kyffhäuserbund existed from 1921 to 1945, from which today's shooting club emerged in 1950. A riding club was also founded in 1949, which was dissolved again in the course of motorization.
