After basic training in Zurich and a first academic degree in Saumur , Ostervald studied theology in Orléans with Claude Pajon (1626–1685), in Paris with Jean Claude and in Geneva with Louis Tronchin (1629–1705). In 1683 he was ordained a pastor in his hometown. He gained great influence as a preacher, pastor, teacher, and author during his lifetime. Among his numerous works, his revision of the translation of the Bible by Pierre-Robert Olivétan was best known.
