Jean Frédéric Ostervald
Jean [-] Frédéric Ostervald (also Johann Friedrich Osterwald ; born November 25, 1663 in Neuchâtel , † April 14, 1747 in Neuchâtel) was a Reformed theologian from Neuchâtel .
After basic training in Zurich and a first academic degree in Saumur , Ostervald studied theology in Orléans with Claude Pajon (1626–1685), in Paris with Jean Claude and in Geneva with Louis Tronchin (1629–1705). In 1683 he was ordained a pastor in his hometown. He gained great influence as a preacher, pastor, teacher, and author during his lifetime. Together with Jean-Alphonse Turrettini and Samuel Werenfels , he formed the so-called "Theological Triumvirate of Switzerland", which, contrary to the strict Calvinism, prepared ideas of the Enlightenment and Pietism . Theologically he showed a certain inclination towards Socinianism and Arminianism .
Among his numerous works, his revision of the translation of the Bible by Pierre-Robert Olivétan was best known.
