Möllensen is a district of the Lower Saxony municipality of Sibbesse with around 120 inhabitants. It is located south of the Hildesheim Forest .

history

Agriculture once dominated life, but only two farms are still active in the village. The residents of Möllensen maintain the village community at many regionally known events, such as the Easter bonfire, May Day, the soap box race on Ascension Day and the pumpkin festival.

The place was first mentioned in a document as "Molem" and "Molinhus" in 1227 as a branch of the church in Eberholzen . Parts of the Marienkirche in Möllensen are said to date from this time. It can be assumed that a gentleman "Molem" settled down on this water-rich place with his good soil.

At Pentecost in 1783, a storm with heavy hail showers had devastating effects on villages and lands on the southern slope of the Hildesheim Forest. In memory of the many victims, the “hail celebration” (around the Whitsun days) is still held in Möllensen and other localities in our time.

At the beginning of the 20th century Möllensen had 115 inhabitants. In 1901, the Bodenburg – Gronau section of the single- track Elze – Bodenburg railway line was inaugurated, which led directly past Möllensen in the south. Möllensen was not given a train station or stopping point, however, as the train station in neighboring Hönze was only about a kilometer away.

The most famous temporary resident of Möllensen is the "Solling poet" and local history researcher Heinrich Sohnrey , who worked at the local school from 1886 to 1889 and wrote the book "Der Bruderhof". The school building is well preserved and is used as a residential building. A plaque above the entrance commemorates him. In Möllensen there was also the Bruderhof, from which Sohnrey was inspired to write his book of the same name. The farm fell victim to a fire in the 1980s.

On March 1, 1974 Möllensen was incorporated into Sibbesse.

coat of arms

The design of the municipal coat of arms of the formerly independent municipality of Möllensen comes from the heraldist and coat of arms painter Gustav Völker , who designed all coats of arms in the Hanover region . The municipality was given the local coat of arms on June 4, 1938 by the President of the Province of Hanover . The district administrator from Alfeld presented it on January 6, 1939.

Möllensen coat of arms
Blazon : "In the silver shield there is a blue bar , covered with aneight-pointed golden star ( sun wheel )framedby a golden ring ."
Justification of the coat of arms: Since the historical traditions of the village of Möllensen offered no connection possibilities for the design of the coat of arms, the rich treasure of rural symbolism, which has been extensively preserved in the village of Möllensen, was used. In many of the spars of the farmhouses we find the sun wheel in the form used in the coat of arms.

Attractions

  • In the center of the village, the Protestant church of St. Lucia from 1744 with its distinctive roof turret that has been supplied with slips is worth a visit; part of the structure dates back to the Middle Ages. Inside are u. a. the wooden ceiling from the end of the 17th century and the font from 1603 with well-preserved reliefs are remarkable.
  • A memorial stone in front of the church commemorates the 777th anniversary of the town, which was celebrated in 2004. Möllensen's coat of arms can be seen on the back of the stone.
  • Opposite the church is the former school where the local history researcher and writer Heinrich Sohnrey worked.
