Segeste is a district of the municipality Sibbesse in the district of Hildesheim , Lower Saxony , Germany.

geography

Segeste is located south of Hildesheim on the southern flank of the Hildesheim Forest between the Weserbergland nature park in the west and the Harz in the southeast. The place is traversed by the Alme (tributary of the Riehe ).

history

The meaning of the name of Segeste, which was first mentioned as "Seguti" in 845, is still unclear today. At that time Corvey Monastery owned eighty acres there. There was often speculation about a connection with the “ Cheruscan prince Segestes ”, especially because there is a parcel called “Burgstelle” not far from the village. In 1020 Segeste was mentioned as "Segate".

At the beginning of the 20th century there were 263 people in Segeste.

On November 7, 1901, the railway line from Elze to Gronau was extended to Bodenburg , and a train station was built between Almstedt and Segeste. Initially, five pairs of passenger trains stopped here a day, and an existing lime works in Almstedt was given its own siding for its freight traffic. On September 24, 1966, however, passenger traffic on the railway line was discontinued, and in 1974 goods traffic as well.

Incorporations

After the incorporation on March 1st, 1974, Segeste belongs to the Almstedt district .

On November 1, 2016, Almstedt and Segeste merged with the other parishes of the Sibbesse parish to form the new parish Sibbesse.

politics

Local councilor and local mayor

Segeste is represented at the local level by the Almstedt local council.

coat of arms

The municipality was awarded the coat of arms on November 29, 1938 by the President of the Province of Hanover . The district administrator from Alfeld presented it on February 15, 1939.

Segeste coat of arms
Blazon : “In red over a green shield foot on a white , restrained horse with a gold bridle and goat saddle , through the front bulge of which the bridle is passed, a looking silver rider in the costume of the 10th century, consisting of a knee-free silver tunic open at the neck with long sleeves, waistbands and a golden, cap-like helmet that exposes the flowing golden hair. In his right hand he has agolden lance runningin the upper edge of the shield , on the golden hanger a sword with a golden hilt and a silver scabbard, which is covered with gold above and below; the left pulls the reins. "
Foundation of the coat of arms: For the municipality of Segeste there are still a number of open farms from the time of the early centuries of the Middle Ages. This quite remarkable statement is the basis of the coat of arms, which depicts an armed free peasant of the 10th century who marched out to exile.

Economy and Infrastructure

Traffic
The most important connection between Segeste and the regional road network is the state road 482; the nearest federal highways are the B 243 in the east and the B 3 in the west. The high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg runs through the municipality without a stop. However, it has a depot here called Almstedt.

Culture and sights

Buildings

  • Numerous well-preserved half-timbered houses can be admired on the main street of Segeste and five houses or courtyards are listed on the street “Im Dorf”.
  • Also worth seeing is the Protestant chapel in Segeste, built in 1770, to which a school was added in 1823. The school was converted into a residential building in 1909, and the chapel was also rebuilt. The organ of the chapel, the bell of which was made in 1835, is located above the altar and not - as usual - on the gallery in the area of the tower. The chapel has around 100 seats. Above its entrance in the area of the west tower, the hood of which is clad with slate, there is the date 1770, carved in stone. A sundial is engraved into the masonry on the south side of the chapel.

Museums

  • The Elze – Bodenburg railway with the Almstedt-Segeste railway station, inaugurated in 1901, was given up in 1966 for passenger traffic and in 1974 also for goods traffic; Meanwhile, however, a museum railway runs several times a year on a renovated section, the Almetalbahn of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Historische Eisenbahn e. V. (AHE) . In the 1980s the station building was relocated from the south to the north side of the tracks.
