The Bodenburg – Elze line was a 23-kilometer branch line in the Leinebergland . The most important stopover was Gronau (Leine) . It is also known as the Lower Saxony Almetalbahn .

history

The line was opened on July 1, 1900 from Elze on the Hanover Southern Railway to Gronau. On November 7, 1901, the section via Sibbesse to Bodenburg was added, which opens up the area south of the Hildesheim Forest . There it has a connection to the Lammetalbahn ( Hildesheim -) Groß Düngen - Bad Salzdetfurth - Bodenburg - Bad Gandersheim, which was completed a few months later .

The connection only served the local development in a rural region. The section between Gronau and Bodenburg disappeared from the timetable on September 25, 1966. At the same time, freight traffic between Gronau and Sibbesse was discontinued, and on August 17, 1970 this section of the route was closed. Between Sibbesse and Segeste freight traffic on 25 September 1974 between Segeste and Bodenburg ended on 31 December 1983. The passenger traffic between Elze and Gronau could still hold up to 31 May 1980, as last this route was of battery railcars of series 515 sail . Freight traffic ended here in 1994, so the line is continuously out of service.

The section between Bodenburg and Almstedt was operated as a museum railway from 1976 to 1991 , it is to be preserved, but is impassable. Museum trains are currently only able to use an approximately 800 meter long section of track in Almstedt. The remaining route was interrupted several times, including during the construction of the high-speed line from Hanover to Würzburg . The route of the disused railway intersects the new line at 38.8 kilometers .

To the east of Nienstedt , a section of the railway embankment has been preserved until shortly before Hönze . On the northern edge of Nienstedt, a soccer field was created in 1987 on part of the former railway line. On the southern edge of Breinum , the former Breinum stop with a bus shelter has been preserved, although it was not set up until the time of the museum railway.

The section from Bodenburg to Almstedt-Segeste, which has not been passable since 1991, but has been completely preserved, was supposed to be prepared for museum traffic again, but in 2013 this was abandoned for cost reasons. Because of the dismantled track connection between the old train station and the new stop in Bodenburg, the Almetalbahn will remain an island operation. At the western end, the museum route is to be extended from the Segeste / BBQ area stop on the embankment, which has been preserved for around 400 meters, to a new end point.
