Shoe and boots

Boots in the coat of arms of Gersbach

Shoes and boots are rather rare common figures in heraldry .

The shoe and the boot are stylized based on the real objects. All shoe and boot shapes appear as a common figure (women's shoes, wooden shoes , soldiers' boots and so on). A boot with and without a gauntlet and also with and without spurs can be shown in the coat of arms. He is emblazoned as a riding boot . The Schnabelschuh and the Bundschuh extend this coat of arms figure and they belonged to the most important footwear. Shoes and boots are often shown two-dimensionally, but also in perspective and as part of people in the coat of arms.

Shoes and boots are rarely shown in pairs, but also appear in coats of arms as tripods or triquetra . If a foot, a leg, a lion, a plant or something else is stuck in the shoe or boot, this fact must be mentioned in the description of the coat of arms.

In the coat of arms, shoes and boots mean, among other things:

  • Symbol for the profession of the bearer / founder of the coat of arms ( shoemaker , also on the nose shield )
  • Symbol for the family name of the bearer / founder of the coat of arms ( cobbler , shoemaker , boots )
  • Symbol for constant change of residence
