The Wesermünde grammar school is a Lower Saxony grammar school, but is located in the city of Bremerhaven in the state of Bremen . This special situation arises from the fact that the former city of Wesermünde and the city of Bremerhaven had varied administrative affiliations . In order to avoid difficulties in school attendance for the children of the Wesermünde district in the city of Bremerhaven, the district council decided to build a high school in Lower Saxony in the Bremen city of Bremerhaven.

history

In 1967 the district council decided to set up a high school for the children between Dorum and Hagen in the Wesermünde district . In view of the location of the transport connections, only the city of Bremerhaven could be considered as a location. And since a lot of children would come to school by train, the area around the main train station was particularly suitable. Initially, teaching began in 1969 in the young fishing school on the sea dike. The number of pupils rose explosively, and in 1971 the school moved into the newly completed center special school in Schiffdorf . In 1972 the new building for the "Kreisgy" in Humboldtstrasse was ready to move into.

After the establishment of the orientation levels in the district and after partial outsourcing of the lower secondary level through the establishment of new departments of the Wesermünde grammar school and later independent grammar schools in the towns of Loxstedt and Langen , the number of pupils declined from 1974 and did not rise again until 1978. In 1984 a technical high school was established at the vocational schools in Schiffdorf . When the orientation levels in Lower Saxony were abolished in 2004, the number of pupils rose again by leaps and bounds, although the pupils in lower secondary level also shared them with the forest school in Hagen and Beverstedt (and in the Beverstedt area with the comprehensive school Hambergen).

After the merging of the Wesermünde and Hadeln districts with the city of Cuxhaven to form the Cuxhaven district in 1977, the school sponsorship was transferred to them.
A cooperation agreement with the City of Bremerhaven allows students in the upper secondary level to choose which school they want. Since summer 2009 there has also been an upper secondary school at the Hagen / Beverstedt forest school.

School profile

There are two special profiles in lower secondary level:

  • the "researcher class" with increased teaching in mathematics and natural sciences (scientific internship, interdisciplinary learning, method learning in the field of experimentation and the subject of computer science)
  • the "bilingual lessons" with special promotion of language skills in English and English lessons also in sports, geography and biology
  • also the universal class with no special focus.

School club

The school association Gymnasium Wesermünde e. V. , which had previously existed as a support group. After the district wanted to close the school library in order to save personnel costs, the association made it its business to keep the stock of 15,000 specialist, children's and youth books available to the students. In addition, celebrations and the social life of the school are promoted.
