history

Imbsen is mentioned for the first time as Immensin in 1093, but the document is a forgery from the 12th century, as is the following mention, which took place in 1152, when Pope Eugene III. the privileges of the Bursfelde monastery are confirmed, including the properties of the monastery in Imbsen. In 1276 and 1281 some properties in Imbsen were given to the Lippoldsberg monastery . The former Hof zu Imbsen was once owned by the rulers, so in a contract with the Landgrave of Hesse in 1396, Duke Otto von Braunschweig prescribed the Hof zu Imbsen to his future wife Agnes for body breeding . Otto's grandmother is said to have already owned this farm. A renewal of this contract took place in 1410 and in 1437 Otto Cocles handed over his lands to his cousin Duke Wilhelm the Elder , among which Imbsen is particularly mentioned. When Duke Wilhelm of Saxony marched against Jühnde and the Bramburg in 1458 , Imbsen was badly damaged by food extortion and devastation; almost 12,000 fierce warriors camped outside the village for five days. At Pentecost 1486 the court was burned down by the Göttingen people, who were hostile to Duke Wilhelm the Younger. They burned it a second time on September 6th, robbed the cattle and took 8 prisoners.

The dilapidated chapel was replaced by a new church in 1860. In 1867 234 people lived in Imbsen, in 1871 the number decreased to 230. At that time there were 28 houses, 43 households. In 1875 the number increased again slightly, 240 local residents were distributed over 31 buildings and 39 households.

In 1969, Imbsen received the “Gold” award in the national competition Our village should become more beautiful .

On January 1, 1973 Imbsen became part of the newly formed community of Niemetal.

coat of arms

Imbsen coat of arms
Blazon : "In the split shield in front in gold (yellow) offset red crosses, behind in black two silver (white) silver thistles with golden (yellow) slugs."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The colors red and gold come from the coat of arms of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , the crosses are reminiscent of the exposed Gothic frescoes in the Bursfelde monastery church . The rare stemless silver thistle grows in the limestone-rich soil of the Imbser Feldmark.
