geography

Geographical location

Sustrum lies west of the Ems and extends to the border with the Netherlands . The A 31 motorway runs through the community with the Lathen junction .

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities in the north are the community Walchum in the combined community Dörpen , in the east the community Kluse (combined community Dörpen) and the community Fresenburg , in the south the community Niederlangen and with Rütenbrock the city Haren .

Community structure

The districts Sustrum, Neusustrum and Sustrum-Moor belong to the municipality.

Sustrum district

The village of Sustrum was first mentioned in the 11th century in the registers of the Corvey monastery and is one of the oldest communities in the Emsland and the surrounding area. In terms of the church, the settlement was affiliated to the parish of Steinbild , which meant the cumbersome and dangerous journey by ferry across the Ems when visiting the church. Although several ferry gaps have survived, it was only after the ferry crash on March 12, 1920 that concrete plans were made to build an own church. The St. Nicholas Church was consecrated on December 6, 1923, and its consecration took place in 1927.

District Neusustrum

Neusustrum was founded on August 17, 1788 as a bog colony . The moor area belonged to the Sustrum brand municipality. The first settlers suffered from existential problems because the meager soil produced hardly any yield and buckwheat was the main food . Improvements only began in 1829, when more productive areas could be bought east of the settlement and rye cultivation began.

Sustrum-Moor district

Sustrum moor stretches in the west to the Dutch border and was created in the 1930s as part of further moor cultivation. From 1950 the first houses and a school were built in the area. In 1959 the church was consecrated, and in 1969 the left-hemisphere center school was opened in Sustrum-Moor.

history

Sustrum was first mentioned in a document in the 11th century and has been known over the years under the names suhtram (12th century), zugerum or Zutzerem (1358). The current name seems to have been common since 1534.

In 1933, the third of the 15 Emsland camps in the area of Sustrum-Moor was opened , the Neusustrum concentration camp for 1000 so-called political prisoners , and from 1934 used as a prison camp for the Ministry of Justice . Among other things, the social democrat and democrat Ludwig Pappenheim from Eschwege died in this camp on January 4, 1934. Allegedly he was "shot while trying to escape". Even after the end of National Socialism , the perpetrators were never prosecuted.
