history

From the beginning of the 16th century, Ostharingen, unlike the surrounding districts, did not belong to the Liebenburg Office , but to the Lutter Office. This was due to the collegiate feud between the duchy of Hildesheim and the duchy of Braunschweig from 1519 to 1523. While the Lutter office belonged to Braunschweig, the other areas were part of Hildesheim, which from 1814 belonged to the Kingdom of Hanover . When the city of Salzgitter was founded in 1942 , Ostharingen finally came to the district of Goslar to compensate for the areas lost to the new city , while it was previously part of the district of Gandersheim .

On July 1, 1972, Ostharingen was incorporated into Liebenburg.

church

church

In the Middle Ages, Haringen was one of the mother churches of the Hildesheim diocese and was the seat of an archdeaconate . Part of the church dates from the Middle Ages. Originally it followed the Romanesque architectural style, but was partially rebuilt with late Gothic elements. In addition to the nave, it consists of two choir rooms. In 1626, during the Battle of Lutter am Barenberge in the Thirty Years' War , the church served as a stable for the troops led by Johann T'Serclaes von Tilly for about a week .

The church was reformed and is now administered together with the church in Bredelem. Some parts of the furnishings have been preserved, such as the altar cross from the mid-18th century and the altar shrine.

Haarhof

Halfway between Ostharingen and Ostlutter is the Haarhof farmstead on Landesstrasse 500. It is the only remaining building in the abandoned villages of West and Central Haringen. This also explains the prefix Ost- in front of the place name of the remaining village. The other two places were abandoned in the Middle Ages. The residents probably moved to Upen. The reason for this was the poor quality of the soil. Subterranean cavities repeatedly led to earth collapses. Most of the fields cultivated by the residents of the two districts are now forested again.

The Haarhof in its current form was only built in 1771 and served as the Vorwerk of the Liebenburg domain. A cattle pasture had been located here since the 14th century, but its operation, as before, agriculture was discontinued, so that the farm served as a forester's house from 1824 to 1963. After that there was an excursion restaurant in the building, but it is no longer in operation today.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows two crossed herrings, a representation that can also be found on the south side of the church. It is assumed that it was the coat of arms of the resident noble family of the Lords of Haringen, who were mentioned in various documents between 1142 and 1217. The two herrings are probably a telling symbol for the place name, because it was called "Herigen" in the 12th century. The coat of arms was introduced in 1998.
