Döhren is a village in the municipality of Liebenburg and is located in the district of Goslar in Lower Saxony . It consists of the historically grown villages Groß Döhren and Klein Döhren, which, according to the main statute of the municipality of Liebenburg, form two districts within the village of Döhren.

geography

Döhren is located on the southeast slope of the Salzgitter mountain range . Due to the fact that Döhren grew together from two town centers, it stretches in a noticeably elongated manner into the farmland to the east. Klein Döhren with its 420 inhabitants has less than half as many as Groß Döhren (872, 2018).

The following places surround Döhren:

history

The mouth of the Schroeder tunnel

On May 29, 1000, the village of Durnede is first mentioned in a certificate from Emperor Otto III. mentioned, who gave 3 Hufen (90  acres ) of fields to his head coach Esiko  . The place was in the Leragau . From the oldest known forms of the name Durnede and Durnide, the current form Döhren developed over the centuries via Dhornede (1258), Dhornethe (1278) and Dornede (1325) .

The increase in population in Döhren, later called Groß Döhren, led to the establishment of the neighboring village of Klein Döhren in the 13th century. In contrast to other subsidiary foundings, Klein Döhren has now almost reached the size of Groß Döhren. However, in the course of the Thirty Years' War in the first half of the 17th century, all buildings were also destroyed here. As a result, however, many courtyards, half-timbered houses and paths were rebuilt, so that the character of the village has been preserved to this day.

In the 14th century there was also a noble family in Döhren, who probably lived on a castle that is no longer preserved.

On July 1, 1972, Groß Döhren was incorporated into the community of Liebenburg.

With the election of a joint local council on September 11, 2016 and the amendment of the main statutes of the Liebenburg community, Groß Döhren and Klein Döhren were merged to form the new village of Döhren. The residential areas of Groß Döhren and Klein Döhren had already grown together many years earlier.

Doehrenhausen

The location of the village of Döhren made spatial expansion almost impossible. A few kilometers south of today's Groß Döhren, the Döhrenhausen settlement was built east of Dörnten. Large parts of the forest had to be cleared for this purpose. Today there is only a forester's house and a tiling shop on the site. During this time around 1278, Klein Döhren was also created, as the word Groß was first mentioned before the name Döhren in this year .

Mining

For the mining history of the place see also: Grube Fortuna and Schroederstollen

In the neighboring Salzgitter ridge , iron ore mining took place for almost a century until 1963, first in open-cast mining and later also in underground mining . In 1937 the “Morgenstern” iron ore mine began operations south towards Hahndorf . In 1963 operations were stopped due to unprofitability, and the shaft was filled in 1964. In the years that followed, chemical waste was improperly disposed of in the mine; between 1972 and 1993 the district of Goslar used the site as a household waste dump. The chemicals that were once disposed of make follow-up work to monitor the groundwater necessary to this day.

There was also an ore loading point on site for transport by small train to Ilsede .

coat of arms

Groß Döhren and Klein Döhren have their own coats of arms. The coat of arms of Groß Döhren resembles a modified Drudenfuß (five-pointed star), but the connection between the upper tips is missing. The two free points run into the symbols of mining, i.e. mallets and irons . They are reminiscent of the nearby Fortuna mine , which was the workplace for many residents from 1868 to 1963. The Drudenfuß was taken from the seal of the Goslar patrician Bartold von Döhren, who probably came from Döhren, from 1307. The coat of arms was introduced in 1961.

The coat of arms of Klein Döhren is a reference to the most important branches of the population. The ears of wheat indicate agriculture, which has been the determining factor for the village since it was founded. And mallets and irons , the miner's tools, are reminiscent of the nearby Morgenstern mine , whose iron ore deposit was discovered in the mid-19th century and which was operated until 1963. The coat of arms was adopted in 1981 and was given its current black and gold color in 1998.

Transport links

Döhren is located on the state road 510, which connects the village with Liebenburg, Groß Mahner and Salzgitter-Bad in the north and north-west and with Weddingen and Vienenburg in the south-east. There is also a district road that leads to Hahndorf and Goslar in the south.

Attractions

The rectory is the oldest building in Groß Döhren. It dates from 1625 and thus survived the Thirty Years' War . Only part of the tower remained of the church. It was almost completely rebuilt from 1670 onwards. The spire was renewed in 1870.

Klein Döhren Church

The first church in Klein Döhren was built shortly after the village was founded and belonged to the parish in Groß Döhren. When it became too small, this church was demolished in the 19th century. The defense tower was preserved and the nave was rebuilt in 1858/59. The medieval altar block was rebuilt in the church. The same applies to a stone coat of arms belonging to the von Schwicheldt family that was walled up in the sacristy. The parish school house is now used as an event location.
