history
Place name and early history
Wehre was founded on a major military and trade route between Goslar and Magdeburg . The village, which was then part of the Liergau , was named in 1053 in a document from the Roman-German Emperor Heinrich III. (1016-1056) mentioned for the first time after Thietmar (Saxony) was disposed of as a result of an imperial dispute. Wehre was also mentioned under the following names:
- 1146: Werre
- 1174/95: Werra
- 1209: Werro
- 1337: Were
- 1551: Who
- 1696: weirs
The most likely interpretation of weirs as a “protected elevated point”. This name would then come from a primitive Germanic root * wara- . The importance as a fish weir ( old Saxon werr ) is also possible and adapted to the importance in the further development .
At first, today's Werre was called Groß Werre , before it was mentioned in 1146 in a deed of foundation of the St. Godehard monastery in Hildesheim without any further addition.
Small weirs
About 1.7 kilometers north of weirs (approximate coordinates: 52 ° 1 ' N , 10 ° 31' O ) is the Wüstung small weirs (also known as Ostwehre hereinafter) on the single Ortsstelle findings have been discovered until the ice age. The village was mentioned together with the main town Wehre, in 1053 as Ostwerri . The expansion site, which was handed down to the end as Lutteken Were , probably fell to the end of the 16th century, possibly not until the Thirty Years War .
Modern times
In the Thirty Years' War weirs was badly damaged in 1626 after troops from Lutter am Barenberge occupied the village.
At the end of the Second World War , Wehre was taken by American troops on April 9, 1945 without a fight. Until March 1, 1974, Wehre belonged to the district of Goslar , before the place was incorporated into the municipality of Schladen and this was added to the district of Wolfenbüttel together with other communities in exchange with the then Wolfenbüttelschen Bad Harzburg . With the transformation of the joint municipality of Schladen into a unified municipality , Wehre became a district of the municipality of Schladen-Werla on November 1, 2013.
Population development
With the influx of displaced people, the population of Wehres doubled in the post-war period, before it sank to the current level of around 230. The trend for Wehre's population is negative.
