Herzog Juliushütte is the name of a steelworks founded in 1575 and the settlement that was built not far. Today both belong to the town of Langelsheim and are located in the Astfeld district .
At the exit of the Grane from the Harz valley of the same name , the Brunswick Duke Julius had a steelworks and settlement built in the 16th century. Together with the Frau-Sophien-Hütte and the Okeraner Frau-Marien-Hütte , metal extraction from Rammelsberg ores was concentrated in these three huts in the 16th century. The smelter existed until 1967 and processed ores containing lead , zinc and rare metals, etc. a. from the Rammelsberg near Goslar . Most of the hut's old buildings were demolished in 1970. Today only rare metals such as arsenic , germanium and indium are produced at the site.
The Granetalsperre lies above the settlement . It was built from 1966 to 1969, is operated by Harzwasserwerke GmbH and serves exclusively to supply drinking water. In the past, there was also a train station on the Neuekrug-Hahausen-Goslar railway line in the settlement .
The ironworks and the Herzog Juliushütte settlement formed a municipality in the Gandersheim district , which was incorporated into the Astfeld municipality on January 1, 1970.
