history
Early history
A large number of excavations and finds provide information about the prehistory and early history of human life in the area of the (present-day) Emsland. The huge stone graves from the younger Stone Age (3000 BC) as well as archaeological finds from the middle and younger Bronze Age (1400-700 BC) should be mentioned here in particular. The sites are on the dry gees east of the Ems , mainly on the Hümmling . The settlements at that time in the area of today's municipality Geeste are limited to the high Geest ridge in Hesepe, Dalum and Geeste. These "pagan", ie pre-Christian settlements developed from individual farms to small associations in the form of clustered villages .
Incorporations
On February 1, 1971, the communities Dalum and Osterbrock were incorporated. On March 1, 1974, Bramhar, Groß Hesepe and Varloh were added.
Place names
- Bramhar (near Meppen): first clearly mentioned 1480 (Holthing, Meppen). Braom , Bram-har , Bram-hair : broom broom on a hill, sand dune = gorse hill / height. The defining word bram = thorn, thorn; from Indo-European bhrom / bhrem = to form a point; it describes the enclosure of a place. The basic word har / her = women's hair, goddess Ertha, Hera; from germ. hera , cf. Old High German / Old Saxon / Old North. har names a place of worship of the (earth) goddess. So it was probably a place of worship surrounded by thorns, where the earth goddess was worshiped.
- Dalum : founded in Saxon times, before 700 AD, first clearly mentioned in 945 or 1122 (Corvey). Dalamum , Dal-ham , Dalem : home ( um , em ) in the valley ( Dal ) or low pasture or brook depression ("Bääke"), ham = angle. Vredevoort Castle was located on the Ems between Dalum and Geeste .
- Geeste : founded in Saxon times, before 700 AD, first clearly mentioned 890–900 (Werden). gest , geest : dry, barren sand ridge, poor land. Geczi (890), Gehse (1350), Geiße (1649).
- Hesepe : founded in Saxon times, before 700 AD; contains two stems from old age. The name appears for the first time in the Corveyer registers around 1000 as Hasba , in 1181 the place name appears in the current form Hesepe . The basic word epe , old form apa , can be found all over Germany, mostly in the Sauerland, and describes a small watercourse everywhere. It is believed to be the Sanskrit Ambhas (water), Latin amnis , old ambnis , as well as the Greek ombros , Latin imber ( downpour ) and also the Celtic-Irish abh (river), so in short an Indo-German root word . The determinant has or häs (always long spoken: Häsepe ) is more difficult to interpret . The old form Hasba (probably more correct Hasapa ) for Hesepe can not derive the has from the river Hase, since then there would be a duplication that is foreign to the old place name. Has and Haas are often found in place names without allowing a uniform conclusion. The best thing to think about is the meaning has = dark, fog, which also goes well with the water of the Hase or Ems.
- Osterbrock : founded in 1907 as Gut Geeste . 1932 privatization and conversion to the Osterbrock community. Ossenbruch - Ochsenbruch - Osterbrock .
- Varloh (near Meppen): first clearly mentioned 1146 (Corvey, Werden). far (sheep, see Faroe Islands , sheep islands) and lo , loh also la (bushes, forests, light oaks), i.e. a sheep pasture with bushes. Varnla (1146).

coat of arms
Blazon : In green a slanting left silver wave bar, accompanied above by a silver derrick, below by an eight-spoke silver wagon wheel. The municipality of Geeste was created through the merger of the above-mentioned districts. All of the formerly independent communities are to the right and left of the Ems. That is why there is a white wave bar in the municipality's coat of arms as a symbol for the Ems. The parish is a rural parish, so the background is green. Agriculture and oil production are of great importance in this municipality, which is why a derrick and a wagon wheel are depicted in the coat of arms. |
