Elsenz is a village in the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg , which has belonged to Eppingen since December 1, 1971 .

history

The village lies at the source of the Elsenz river of the same name and was first mentioned as an imperial property in 1137 , after which it was owned by imperial knights . The Electoral Palatinate acquired the place in 1365. When the Electoral Palatinate was divided, Elsenz fell to the Principality of Leiningen in 1803 , after which the Principality of Leiningen quickly became an independent municipality within the Grand Duchy of Baden in the Eppingen district . After a lightning strike in July 1905, several buildings in the center of the village were destroyed by flames. From 1924 affiliation to the Bruchsal district office , from 1936 to the Sinsheim district office . In 1939 there were 1257 inhabitants, at the end of 1945 there were 1320. On December 1, 1971, the municipality was incorporated into Eppingen and thus moved to the district of Heilbronn .

Even decades after the incorporation, a large part of the residents of the Elsenz suburb are striving to regain independence for Elsenz and consequently want to detach the village from Eppingen. Since supporters of this opinion were also represented in the Elsenz local council, there was a dispute between the Elsenz local council, on the one hand, and the Eppingen local council and the city administration, on the other hand, over the question of who should be the mayor of Elsenz, which was also noticed far beyond Eppingen should be chosen. The local council did not want to vote for the candidate proposed by the local council because he was accused of pursuing the destruction of the entire city. Instead, the local council elected another member of the local council to be the mayor, who did not want to accept the election.

Elsenz is still strongly characterized by agriculture, whereby traditionally tobacco is also grown. Today the place has about 1800 inhabitants. There are numerous historical properties in the village, but there is also a very high need for renovation.
