Avendorf is a district of the Lower Saxony municipality of Tespe in the joint municipality of Elbmarsch .

geography

Avendorf is located east of Tespe, on the L217 . The Elbe flows north in the immediate distance.

history

Avendorf belonged to the diocese of Ratzeburg in 1230 . The village is first mentioned in a document in the Ratzeburg tithe register from 1230. At that time it was still called "Vventhorp" , in 1313 "Ouendorpe" . The village was founded in the colonization period of the 12th century. Before the middle of the 14th century, the village, like Tespe, was relocated to the Elbmarsch opposite.

In the Middle Ages Avendorf was a village on the border. The Elbe was the limit. Therefore, smuggling was a major industry at the time. In the center of the village there was an almost 200-year-old oak, which was felled in June 2008 because of pest infestation, called "French oak" because it was planted during the so-called French period from 1811 to 1814 , when 9,000 soldiers of the French army camped there under Napoleon's command . (At that time Avendorf in the arrondissement of Lüneburg belonged to the French department of the mouth of the Elbe .)

On April 20, 1945, 22 farms were destroyed by bombs in an air raid. A memorial stone today commemorates the victims of this attack.

The incorporation of the formerly independent municipality of Avendorf took place in the course of the regional reform in Lower Saxony . Since then Avendorf has belonged to the municipality of Tespe.

Economy and Infrastructure

Avendorf is an elongated village that hugs the Elbe. Here the volunteer fire brigade is the linchpin of the village community. There is still a campsite in the village.
