Peter A. Hall

Peter Andrew Hall (* 1950 in Montréal , Canada ) is a Canadian political scientist and Krupp Foundation Professor of European Studies at the Department of Government at Harvard University and at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies. Hall is best known for his work in the field of institutional and European research as well as economic policy.

Academic career and research

Hall graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science in 1972 and then moved to Balliol College at Oxford University , where he received his M. Phil. In Political Science in 1974. This was followed by an AM degree in political science from Harvard University (1978). Hall also received his PhD from Harvard University in 1982.

With the publication of the book Varieties of Capitalism , together with the economist David Soskice , Hall coined the term Varieties of Capitalism . This explanatory approach goes back to a large extent on Soskice's research since the late 1980s and bundles the discussions about neo-corporatism , neo-institutionalism and new institutional economics into a stringent overall model for the first time.

Between 2001 and 2006 he headed the Center for European Studies at Harvard University. 2006 received an honorary doctorate from the renowned Institut d'études politiques de Paris . In 2009 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin and in 2010 received a fellowship from the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg in Delmenhorst. Hall has been a fellow of the British Academy since 2017, and received a scholarship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation for 2018/19 . In 2019 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
