Gottfried Glechner (born July 3, 1916 in Freiling, municipality of Gurten near Ried im Innkreis , Upper Austria ; † October 10, 2004 in Braunau am Inn ) was an Austrian writer and philologist . He is the father of the Austrian painter and writer Wolfgang Glechner .

Life (before 1979)

Gottfried Glechner was the eighth of nine children in a farming family. In 1936 he passed the Matura at the Episcopal Boys ' Seminar Kollegium Petrinum in Linz- Urfahr. Three years of theology studies followed. In 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and served as a soldier for six years. After returning home in the summer of 1945, he enrolled in German and Latin at the University of Innsbruck and completed this course, including a teaching examination and doctorate, in four years. The stations of his subsequent teaching activity were the grammar schools in Kremsmünster , Ried and finally Braunau , where he lived from 1960 and taught until his retirement. As a linguist, Gottfried Glechner examined the dialect geography and the etymology of the place names in the Innviertel .

A late writer (1979 to 2004)

Gottfried Glechner published his first volume of stories, “Our Village”, rural stories in Upper Austrian dialect, only in 1979, at the age of 62, but then quickly became known for it, especially in Upper Austria and Bavaria. A good dozen more books followed almost every year. His reputation as a crowd puller earned the passionate speaker within a few years invitations to more than 500 readings, in which he was able to inspire a large group of listeners all over Austria and Bavaria with his works live and also via radio. In 1996 Gottfried Glechner received the culture medal of the state of Upper Austria for his work .

meaning

Gottfried Glechner's stories take place in the traditional rural world of his youth, largely before the mechanization of agriculture. Most are written in Upper Austrian (Innviertel) dialect, whose richness of color Gottfried Glechner uses masterfully. Above all, he gains positive and humorous aspects from the rural world.
