history

Origin of the name "Steinbeck"

The name Steinbeck is derived from the words “many stones ” and a stream (Old Saxon: biki , beke ).

The stones

Remains of the large stone grave in Steinbeck

During the Ice Age, an extremely large number of stones were "transported" to Steinbeck through huge ice masses from Scandinavia . More than 4000 years ago, the first groups of settlers came to Steinbeck from what is now Turkey . The first Steinbeckers used the stones found in Steinbeck to build a large stone grave for their deceased . The grave site ran across today's B75 and was 64 m long and 4 m wide. According to unoccupied records, Napoleon I's troops destroyed the grave for the construction of a road (today's B75) during the French period in Hamburg . There are therefore only a few stones left from the former burial site. You can still find the remains on the way to the Stuvenwald at the castle courtyard on Wenzendorfer Straße.

The brook

The Steinbach rises southwest of Meilsen at a small pond between fields. This small body of water is older than the Elbe and was formed during the ice ages. Its water flows over the Seppenser Bach and the Seeve as a small forest and meadow brook into the Elbe.

Steinbeck story

The history of Steinbeck is probably closely linked to Charlemagne , who drove the Saxons who lived here to the west around the year 804 .

Significance in World War II

The Steinbeck innZur Eiche ” and the Steinbeck hotelHoheluft ” played a special role in the history of Hamburg at the end of the Second World War : negotiations between the Allies and the Germans took place in the inn “Hoheluft” on April 29, 1945 led to the fact that at the end of the Second World War the city of Hamburg could be handed over to the British without a fight . The negotiating table of that time can still be viewed today in the “Hoheluft” inn.

Territorial reform

The villages of Steinbeck and Meilsen have belonged together as a municipality of Steinbeck since 1865 . This was incorporated into the town of Buchholz in the north heath on July 1, 1972. Steinbeck and Meilsen have been part of this city since then.

Further development of the places

Steinbeck experienced a large increase in the number of inhabitants after the Second World War. New building areas such as the Heimgarten , Kattenberge Nord housing estate and the largest prefabricated house exhibition in Germany at the time in the Vaenser Heide , built in the 1970s, attracted many families to Steinbeck with their single-family houses .

Meilsen, on the other hand, barely grew and is still today an original farming village. Thatched farmhouses and barns as well as old oak trees still characterize the picture today.

coat of arms

For a long time there was a desire in Steinbeck's politics and in parts of the population to create their own coat of arms . However, the Lower Saxony Municipal Code (NGO) did not allow this. Only former municipalities, such as the other Buchholz villages that already had their own coat of arms, were allowed to continue to use their coat of arms. However, Steinbeck and Meilsen never had their own coat of arms. However, after a change in the NGO and interim replacement by the NKomVG , Steinbeck is able to use his own coat of arms. Therefore, a graphic designer was commissioned to develop a modern coat of arms for Steinbeck and Meilsen.

economy

In the Steinbeck district of Buchholz, there is a large commercial site in the "Vaenser Heide" industrial area I. It's the oldest in town. Mostly small and medium-sized commercial enterprises have settled here . Since the 2000s, the area has developed into a second, important retail location in the city alongside the city center thanks to the new specialist retail center with branches from OBI , famila , MediaMarkt , Küchen Aktuell , Dat Backhus , Das Futterhaus , Jawoll , LIDL and smaller businesses. There are also several small car dealerships, the headquarters of the occupational safety outfitter Feldtmann KG and the sportswear company killtec , medium-sized craft businesses, the Buchholzer Stadtwerke and a branch of TÜV . Möbel Kraft also operates a large furniture store here and, until a few years ago, its central high-bay warehouse. However, this stands empty and is visible from afar as a landmark due to its size.

There is another industrial area, "Meilsener Straße", directly on Bundesstraße 75 in the Meilsen district. Here the Ostfriesische Teegesellschaft operates one of its central production facilities and warehouses for tea for well-known brands such as milford and Meßmer .

The primary school located in Steinbeck has existed for over 60 years; it was inaugurated on January 15, 1958.

Before the founding of this elementary school, the Steinbeckers had to attend the schools in Buchholz for several centuries, the students from Meilsen the school in Trelde . In 1898 a provisional school was founded in Steinbeck. The large dining room in the von Sneers house was cleared out and set up as a provisional classroom . A few months later, the school board decided to build a new school building in Steinbeck. The property for this was acquired by Georg Frommann. It bordered the courtyard directly to the north.
