Geographical location
Flechtorf is around 12 kilometers southwest of Wolfsburg and around 14 kilometers northeast of Braunschweig . The place is located southwest of the intersection of the L295 highway with the federal highway 39 and northeast of the intersection of the L295 highway with the highway 2 .
Village structure
The locality can be geographically divided into Alt- and Neudorf. The border between these two districts is the Schunter .
history
The first documentary mention goes back to the year 925. Since that time the other forms of the name have also been known: 925 Flahtorp , 1022 Flegtorp , 1100 Flechthorpa , 1129 Vlechthorp . The location on the Schunter in the middle of a predominantly agricultural region led to the establishment of a water mill for grinding grain as early as the 13th century . The Flechtorfer Mühle still exists today as a large company with modern milling technology.
In 1525 and 1526, numerous people were killed in looting. On May 13th, 1729 there was a major fire in the village, in which 26 buildings burned down to their foundations.
Since the Middle Ages, Campen Castle has been located in the village as a low castle between two arms of the Schunter. The complex, first mentioned in the 13th century, was transformed into a castle at the end of the 16th century. As a structural remainder, only the main building remains. During the time of Henry the Lion , camping was the seat of a ministerial . As the bailiff of Campen Castle, the villagers had to pay taxes to him for centuries with taxes in kind . They also had to do manual and clamping services.
Flechtorf used to be on the Braunschweig – Calvörde postal route .
As part of the administrative and community reforms in Lower Saxony , Flechtorf, which until then had belonged to the Braunschweig district as an independent community , was incorporated according to apprenticeship. On March 1, 1974, the community of teaching was added to the district of Helmstedt. About 90 percent of the residents had spoken out in favor of a connection to the closer Wolfsburg.

Explanation of the place name
The place name goes back to the Middle Low German word “vlecht” for “network of branches, hurdles” and is to be understood as a reference to existing wattle (hurdles for keeping livestock, fences to enclose the settlement or similar).
coat of arms
The coat of arms shows a silver scales in blue over a silver braided fence. The wickerwork alludes to the place name. The scales as a symbol of Justitia, i.e. justice, refer to the Lords of Campen, who formerly exercised jurisdiction at the castle of the same name. Flechtorf has had this coat of arms since 1966.
Infrastructure
In Flechtorf there is a primary school built in 1964 at local facilities, which was later expanded. There is also a day-care center, a Protestant church ( Holy Cross Church ) and a village community center built in 1960 with the village archive that has existed since 2002. There is an industrial park in the village. Bus connections lead to Wolfsburg and Braunschweig.
