Traces of the Neolithic beaker culture , such as the Elstorf large stone grave or the Daerstorf large stone grave, show that the area was settled early. In the 12th century a chapel was built in Elstorf on a small hill.

In the 14th century Elstorf was part of the left Elstorf property of the Count of Schwerin zu Harburg.

The Elstorf community achieved independence in 1543 and then comprised eleven villages. Over time, some villages such as Neugraben and Neu Wulmstorf became larger and thus also independent.
