Rottorf am Klei is a small town in the Helmstedt district in Lower Saxony . Rottorf am Klei belongs to the Rennau community and the Grasleben community .
location
The place is located northwest of Helmstedt in the Elm-Lappwald Nature Park and is the southeasternmost tip of the Hasenwinkel .
history
In the 13th century, the Counts of Dassel transferred their goods in Rottorf to the Mariental Monastery , and in 1256 the local chapel was assigned to the monastery with the consent of Bishop Volrad von Halberstadt . In the second half of the 19th century, the street village expanded to the west. On March 1, 1974, Rottorf was incorporated into the Rennau community.

The St. Mary's Church is part of the 2007 church plant Hasenwinkel and thus to the church district Wolfsburg-Wittingen in Sprengel Lüneburg the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover . The nearest Catholic church is St. Norbert in Grasleben about 6 kilometers away .
Mining
Near Rottorf am Klei is the former Ernst-August opencast mine, in which iron-rich marine sediments of the Lias were extracted as calcareous aggregates. Operations ceased in 1950. The rock is generally rich in fossils and contains remains of mussels (including gryphaeids ), spines of lance sea urchins as well as ammonites and belemnites .
