Hans Stumme

Hans Stumme (born November 3, 1864 in Mittweida ; died December 20, 1936 in Dresden ) was a German orientalist and linguist known for his research on Semitic and other Afro-Asian languages .

He studied at the universities of Tübingen , Halle , Leipzig and Strasbourg . In the years 1889 to 1892 he made extensive trips to Eastern Europe , North Africa , Australia and America . He completed his habilitation in 1895. During his studies in Leipzig , Ludolf Krehl , Albert Socin and Friedrich Delitzsch were his teachers. In 1900 he became associate professor for oriental philology in Leipzig, where he was appointed in 1909Honorary Professor of New Arabic and Hamitic Languages ​​has been appointed.

He taught Arabic literature and dialects of the Maghreb, and also gave lectures on Persian , Turkish , Maltese , Ge'ez , Hausa and Berber languages . He was editor of the magazine of the German Oriental Society .

He was a member of the German Oriental Society , the Saxon Academy of Sciences , the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the Società Asiatica Italiana.
