Silvia or Sylvia is a female given name .

Origin and meaning of the name

The name comes from the Latin where silva means forest . Hence the meaning of Silvia / Sylvia is often given as queen of the forest or mistress of the forest. A further connection could also  exist to a form of the air spirits - the sylphs - which are also the air elementals of the Greek tradition. The relationship with Rhea Silvia , the mother of Romulus and Remus, is undisputed .

A saint Silvia , the mother of Pope Gregory the Great, died around the year 592. Her feast day and name day is November 3rd .
