Sylvia Steiner

Sylvia Helena de Figueiredo Steiner (born January 19, 1953 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian lawyer . From March 11, 2003 to March 10, 2012 she was a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague .

Life

Steiner studied law at the University of São Paulo and criminal law at the University of Brasília . She also obtained a master's degree in international law from the Law School of the University of São Paulo .

She then worked as a lawyer until 1982 and then worked for the Ministério Público do Brasil until 1995 . Steiner was also a member and vice-president of the São Paulo Prison Council for four years and, from 1995, a federal judge at the São Paulo Court of Appeal. She was also a member of the Brazilian delegation to the Preparatory Commission for the International Criminal Court (1999–2001) and the Brazilian delegation to the first meeting of the Parties to the International Criminal Court in September 2002.

On March 11, 2003 she was appointed judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague via List A for a term of nine years. She serves as Head of the Pre-Trial Division at the Court and is a member of the First Chamber, which is responsible for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Darfur . On March 10, 2012, she resigned from the college of judges according to schedule.

Steiner is co-founder of the Brazilian Institute for Criminology and Deputy Director of the Brazilian Criminal Sciences Journal . She is also a member of the Executive Council of the Brazilian branch of the International Law Commission .
