Life

Georg David Matthieu: Portrait of Joachim Ulrich Giese

Georg David Matthieu came from and was trained in a family of artists . His father, David Matthieu (1697–1756), was a Prussian court painter. Georg David came from his second marriage to Dorothea Elisabeth Lisiewski . This stepmother and Georg David's stepmother, Anna Rosina Lisiewski (1721–1782), were the daughters of the court painter Georg Lisiewski (1674–1750), who worked at the court of King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia .

In 1762 Georg David Matthieu painted his first commissioned portraits of middle-class families and Swedish aristocratic families in Stralsund , which was the capital of Swedish Pomerania at the time. At the invitation of the Swedish government councilor Adolf Friedrich von Olthofs (1718–1793), he made portraits of the host's circle as well as his portrait of the Mecklenburg Queen (Sophie) Charlotte of Great Britain and Ireland for Gripsholm Castle . Around 1764 Matthieu entered the service of Duke Friedrich von Mecklenburg-Schwerin , who resided at Ludwigslust Palace, and took up permanent residence in Ludwigslust . In the 1760s, the siblings Anna Dorothea Therbusch and Christoph Friedrich Reinhold Lisiewsky were in an intensive, artistic exchange with their nephew Matthieu, which was particularly focused on the night piece and portrait painting . Matthieu was busy producing the portraits of the members of the ducal family throughout his life. His successor at the Ludwigsluster Hof was his uncle Christoph Friedrich Reinhold Lisiewsky.

Matthieu is considered to be one of the outstanding rococo portrait painters in northern Germany . His works can be found in almost all of the former Mecklenburg castles , but also in the Schwerin State Museum , the Berlin Gemäldegalerie and the Stralsund Museum .
