Macroplea pubipennis is a rare aquatic beetle fromthe leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae).
The dull yellow beetle measures around six to seven millimeters and has long antennae. It differs from Macroplea mutica , with which it shares its habitat, only in the shape of the wing tips and the male genitalia. Like all Macropleae , it also lives as an imago under water, mostly at a depth of 25 to 50 centimeters in brackish water covered with reeds, and feeds on aquatic plants such as pondweed ( Potamogeton ) and milfoil ( Myriophyllum ).
Macroplea pubipennis has so far only been found on the Baltic coast of Finland , where two populations are known, one in the Espoonlahti bay off the city of Espoo and one in the archipelago off Paimio.Single finds have been made along the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia as far as Oulu in the north. Further finds are reported from Turkestan in western China , although it is unclear whether these individuals can be assigned to the species M. piligera . In Finland the species is considered threatened and protected.
