Walter Stanley Szot (born March 30, 1920 in Clifton , New Jersey , † November 3, 1981 in Passaic , New Jersey) was an American American football player. He played as a defensive tackle and offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) with the Chicago Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers .

Player career

college

Walt Szot studied after his high school graduation from Bucknell University and played college football for their lower-class football team, the Bucknell Bisons , as a tackle in both defense and offense . In 1942 and 1943 he was elected to the Pennsylvania national team because of his athletic achievements , and in 1943 he was elected All-American . Immediately after graduation, Szot joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific War .

NFL

In 1944 he was selected by the card-Pitt , who syndicate the Chicago Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 18th round of the 176th spot drafted . Walter Szot only joined the Chicago Cardinals in 1946 after completing his military service and was mainly used on the defensive line by head coach Jimmy Conzelman . In 1947 he was able to move into the NFL championship game with his team . Opponents were the Philadelphia Eagles , supervised by Greasy Neale , who had to admit defeat to the Cardinals with 28:21. In 1948 Szot was able to qualify again for the final with the Cardinals. This time the Eagles left the field with a 7-0 win. After this final, Szot moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Szot was suspended from the team after the 1949 season. He was accused of poor attitudes. Shortly before the 1950 season, he asked to continue his career in Pittsburgh and was reinstated in the team. Szot retired after that season and rejoined the United States Marine Corps and then served in the Korean War .
