José Clavijo y Fajardo.

José Clavijo y Fajardo (born March 19, 1726 in Teguise , Lanzarote , † November 3, 1806 ) was a Spanish publicist and writer.

Clavijo studied law and theology in Las Palmas .

He was a friend of Voltaire and Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon . From the latter he translated a number of works. From 1750 the Canary Islands moved to Madrid , published the weekly educational magazine El Pensador there from 1762 and became the king's archivist in 1763 (he had to give up this post after a short time). In 1770 he was appointed director of the royal theaters; but he soon gave up this post to take over the editing of the Mercurio Histórico y Político de Madrid .

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Clavigo is based on the life of José Clavijo y Fajardo and his love for a sister of Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais .
