Benedict Akwuegbu (born November 3, 1974 in Lagos ) is a retired Nigerian football player on the position of a striker .
Club career
Akwuegbu began his career at the age of 15 with the Nigerian first division club Highlanders . In 1991 he moved to Europe for the French Ligue 1 club RC Lens .
In 1992, after a season in France, Akwuegbu left Lens for Belgium , where he spent the next six years. He played for a year at the second division Eendracht Aalst and then three years at KRC Harelbeke , with whom he rose to the 1st division in 1995 . In this league Akwuegbu managed 17 goals in 2 seasons. He then moved to the second division SV Zulte-Waregem , who reached fourth place with him and failed in the play-offs to the first division at KVC Westerlo . Akwuegbu had scored nine goals in just 16 games that season.
He was then committed in 1998 for $ 500,000 from the Austrian first division club Grazer AK , with whom he reached third place and the UEFA Cup in the 1998/99 season . His performance for the fans of the Graz club in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup will not be forgotten. In the home game of Graz against AS Monaco, the Nigerian scored two goals against the goalkeeper of the newly crowned world champion France, Fabien Barthez . One of the two hits was a ball through the legs, also called "Gurkerl" in Austrian football jargon. In 2000 he won the Austrian Cup with the athletes. With the exception of a season on loan in 2002 with the Chinese club Shenyang Yinde , Akwuegbu was under contract with GAK until the end of the 2004 season. In the championship season 2003/04 he still had a few appearances in the autumn season, but lost his regular place and was awarded to FC Kärnten during the winter break.
After further positions in Austria as well as in Germany and Switzerland, Akwuegbu switched to the Chinese club Tianjin Teda in 2006 , followed by further positions in the Far East until he was finally without a club from July 2007. In July 2008 Akwuegbu moved to Beijing Hongdeng in the People's Republic of China . Only half a year later, in January 2009, he returned to Austria, where he signed a contract with SVL Flavia Solva. After seven games and two goals, he left the club in May 2009. In November 2009 he came to the English Football Conference at Basingstoke Town . After two season games with one goal he was released again in May 2010.
