Lionello Manfredonia (born November 27, 1956 in Rome ) is a former Italian football player .
During his active career he played as a sweeper , pre-stopper and defensive midfielder .
Career
In the club
Lionello Manfredonia began his career in 1970 in the youth department of Lazio Rome , with which he won the Campionato Primavera in 1976 . On November 2, 1975, he debuted at the 1: 1 in the match against FC Bologna in Serie A . In the following season he became a regular player and developed into one of the best defensive players in Italy.
In 1980, Lionello Manfredonia was, along with his good friend Bruno Giordano involved in the betting scandal, due to which also Lazio and AC Milan in the Serie B relegated had. Manfredonia was sentenced to twelve months in prison and jailed for three years and six months.
After the expiry of his suspension, which was later reduced to two years, he played again for Lazio in the 1982/83 season and managed to return to Serie A with the team.
After the disastrous 1984/85 season , in which Lazio could only win two of the 30 season games and had to relegate back to Serie B, Lionello Manfredonia left the capital club and moved to record champions Juventus Turin . With Juve , under coach Giovanni Trapattoni , he won the Italian championship and the World Cup in his first year .
After two years in Turin and a total of 77 games with ten goals in a white and black dress, Manfredonia moved back to his hometown and played for AS Roma . There he was not exactly popular with the fans due to his past with local rivals Lazio and the hated Juventus. Lionello Manfredonia retired during the 1989/90 season after suffering a heart attack in a game against Bologna FC on December 30, 1989 .
In the national team
After eleven appearances for the Italian U21 national team , Lionello Manfredonia made his debut on December 3, 1977 in a 3-0 win against Luxembourg .
The following year he became national coach Enzo Bearzot , aged just 21 years, in the Italian squad for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina called, but where it was not a single minute on the pitch, as he in his position with Gaetano Scirea one had strong competitors.
On September 23, 1978, Manfredonia, at the age of only 21, played the last of his four international matches.
