politics

Dirk Spaniel was a member of the district board of the Junge Union Hessen at the end of the 1980s .

With the onset of the refugee crisis , he joined the Alternative für Deutschland in 2015 and became active in the party in October 2016. At the first state list party congress in November 2016, Spaniel was unable to prevail in the top nine places, but was later elected as a direct candidate for the AfD in the Stuttgart I constituency, and in January 2017 at number 10 on the state list. At the state party conference on February 23, 2019, he was elected spokesman for the state association alongside the parliamentary group leader Bernd Gögel . He prevailed against Martin Hess with 371 to 341 votes . Spaniel is part of the völkisch-nationalist "wing" , a rallying movement within the AfD, which the constitution protection classifies as a suspected case of right-wing extremist activities.

In 2019, audio recordings became public in which Spaniel tried to prevent Jörg Meuthen from becoming a possible federal chairman of the AfD as part of intrigues within the party . Meuthen then described the Spaniel as "highly toxic", he subordinated "everything completely to his power fantasies".

Spaniel wrote on his Facebook page that they would “ repeat and repeat this mantra [...] To hell with e-mobility , the CO2 gibberish and the ideological do-good-nonsense! First of all, our jobs come! "
