Charles J. Brabin (born April 17, 1883 in Liverpool , † November 3, 1957 in Santa Monica , California ) was a British-American film director.

Life

Charles Brabin came to the USA in the early 20th century. He initially lived off odd jobs in New York City and tried his hand at theater. In 1908 he came to the Edison Manufacturing Company and initially took on roles as an actor and later as a director. In Hollywood he worked for the Metro Pictures Corporation and later for the MGM studio that resulted from it .

In 1915 he filmed the Edgar Allan Poe poem The Raven with Henry B. Walthall in the role of Edgar Allan Poe. During the filming of Ben Hur , Brabin temporarily replaced Rex Ingram in the director's chair in 1924 , but was later replaced by Fred Niblo himself . In 1929 he directed The Bridge of San Louis Rey based on Thornton Wilder 's novel of the same name with Lili Damita in the leading role. His later work included Vollblut , an early Clark Gable film, and the gangster film The Beast of the City starring Jean Harlow , both from 1931, and A Wicked Women , in which Mady Christians made her US screen debut in 1934. In the same year Brabin withdrew into private life.

In 1932 Brabin first directed Rasputin: The Demon of Russia with the three siblings John Barrymore , Ethel Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore , but was quickly replaced by Richard Boleslawski after filming began .

His marriage to Theda Bara lasted from 1921 until her death in 1955.
