Robert Abercromby
Sir Robert Abercromby G.CB (occasionally also Abercrombie ; born October 21, 1740 in Clackmannanshire , † November 3, 1827 in Airthrey ) was a British general.
Robert Abercromby, a younger brother of General Sir Ralph Abercromby , fought in the Indian and French War and the American War of Independence , became Major General in 1790, and was then Governor of Bombay and Commander in Chief of the British Army in India from October 1793 to January 1797 . In 1798 he was elected to Parliament for Clackmannanshire and was Governor of Edinburgh Castle from 1801 .
When the former naval officer Robert Haldane (1764-1842) - whose younger brother James Alexander Haldane had married Abercromby's niece Mary Joass - decided in 1798 to sell his property in order to devote himself to spreading the Christian faith, Abercromby acquired Airthrey Castle , a romantic castle near Stirling in Scotland built by Robert Adam in 1791 . Today it serves as the administration building of the university there.
