Bombay Presidency around 1906

After establishing the presidency of Bombay as a province of British India , the crown installed Abraham Shipman as the first governor of Bombay in 1664 . In 1668 the city was ceded to the British East India Company , which then moved its administrative headquarters from Surat to Bombay. They named George Oxedender their first governor for Bombay. The region at that time was an archipelago of small islands and formed a small enclave on the west coast of India.

After the expansion of British rule to the hinterland, the post of governor gained importance. In 1803 the Presidency of Bombay consisted only of the islands of Salsette and Bombay and the cities of Surat and Bankot . The remaining areas were added by 1827. In 1862 the British Crown formally took possession of the region.

In 1947 the area became part of the independent state of India . The government appointed Raja Maharaj Singh as the first Indian governor. In 1950 the state of Bombay was founded including the former princely states . After Bombay continued to expand territorially in 1956, the new state of Gujarat was split off on May 1, 1960 and the rest of the area was renamed in the state of Maharashtra . The post of governor of Bombay was abolished and continued as governor of Maharashtra .
