George Russell Clerk ( Albert Smith , 1934)

Sir George Russell Clerk GCMG , CB , PC ( November 29, 1874 - June 18, 1951 ) was a British diplomat .

Life

George Russell Clerk attended Eton College and then studied at New College , Oxford . He joined the Foreign Service in 1899 and was promoted to third class Embassy Secretary on March 21, 1901. From 1903 to 1904 George Russell Clerk was Consul General in Addis Ababa . In 1906 he was chargé d'affaires in the kingdom of Abyssinia . In 1907 he was an assistant in the Foreign Office . In 1910 he was chargé d'affaires in Constantinople . In 1919 he was the private secretary of the Foreign Minister. From 1919 to 1926 he was the British envoy in Prague . From 1926 to 1933 was ambassador in Ankara .

In 1933 he became ambassador to Brussels . From 1934 to 1937 he was ambassador to Paris . In 1937, Clerk was retired .

He was a member of the Privy Council , Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, and Companion of the Order of the Bath . He also received various foreign medals.
