Frederik Dekkers . also: Friedericus Deckers, (* December 23, 1644 in 's-Hertogenbosch ; † November 3, 1720 in Leiden ) was a Dutch medic.

Life

The son of Hubertus Dekkers received his first lessons in his hometown, where he met his future teacher Florentius Schuyl, among others . On December 5, 1664 he enrolled as a student of medicine at the University of Leiden , where he attended the lectures of Franciscus Sylvius , Schuyl and Johannes Hornius (also: van Horne, 1621–1670). On February 1, 1668 he received his doctorate in medicine on the subject of de Dolore captis . Then he settled as a doctor in Leiden. Here he appeared as the editor of the writings of the Amsterdam doctor Paul Barbette (1620–1666). These include Pauli Barbette tractatus de peste sum notis (Leiden 1667) and Praxis Barbettiana, cum notis et observationibus (Leiden 1669, 1675, 1678).

In 1673 he himself became active as the author of the work Exercitationes practicae circa methodum medendi, auctoritate, ratione et observationibus plurimis confirmatae . In it, he arranged in eight sections various medicines that were known to treat the diseases known at the time. On November 15, 1694 he was appointed professor of practical medicine by the curators of the Leiden University, which task he took on on December 20 of the same year with the speech De medicina et medendi methodo (Leiden 1695). The experienced and critical clinician, who was an admirer of the classics, was appointed professor of the Collegio practico medici on May 18, 1697, with which the management of the Leiden University Clinic was connected.

In his capacity as a university lecturer in Leiden he also took part in the organizational tasks of the educational institution and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1700/01 . He set this task with the speech Quis revera artis medicae gnarus, quid illius peritus sit dignus vocari? low. He had made great contributions as a medical practitioner until he retired in 1719 and was succeeded by Hermannus Oosterdijk Schacht . Dekkers has made a name for himself in the field of tracheotomy and had developed an auricle that was supposed to help the hearing impaired. In addition, drew attention to a slight clouding of the urine of seriously ill consumption addicts after boiling the urine and adding acids and thus discovered in 1694 a possibility of protein detection in the urine. A complete edition of his medical writings was published in Amsterdam in 1743 in two volumes.
